Musicians, mixologists and magicians. Sounds mmmarvelous to us. If you're looking for an incredible festival in San Francisco then look no further. We've got all the inside tips on Outside Lands, a musical mega fest with a side of art and culture. Held each August, this creative extravaganza draws in over 30,000 people on each day of the three day event.
The festival takes place in the city's Golden Gate Park and hosts a number of well known bands and performers. Previous years have seen the likes of Muse, Kings of Leon, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Lana Del Ray. Alongside the impressive music acts, visitors can wander around the polo fields (the main festival site) in the western end of the park. The five main stages (Lands End, Twin Peaks Sutro, Panhandle and Presidio) are complemented by other areas, including a comedy tent, a farmer's market and the park-wide Outsider Arts installation. Expect to see creativity everywhere; as the festival progresses more and more sculptures and murals appear - on walls, in the trees and across the grounds.
The other big festival tick is Outside Land's eco-credentials, namely its dedicated Eco Lands area in Hellman Hollow. Featuring everything from an education workshop to a refillable water station, the space provides talks and advice on green energy, ocean clean-ups and gardening. There's also a handy festival app that helps you plan your way around, including what's on where and when. If dashing between awesome headline acts leaves you peckish, then you're spoiled for choice - the festival is known as a culinary hub. 79 vendors serve up a a range of cuisines, from street food trucks to restaurant partnerships. If you want to upgrade your appetite then the Forest Feast Trestle dining experience is the perfect choice, where decadent plates are served as the New Orleans Style Brass Band serenade diners and magic is performed by Jon Armstrong.
For something a little more booze based, the festival's Wine Lands area features over 120 different varieties; chat with winemakers and learn how to pair with the professionals. If you prefer your tipples more beery, then Ye Olde Beer Lands showcases breweries from San Francisco, Napa, Half Moon Bay, Sonoma and beyond. Alternatively, quench your thirst at Cocktail Magic, a wooded wonderland of mixologists and magicians.
Be sure to purchase accommodation and tickets as early as possible as most places book up quickly. Trust us, you don't want to be on the outside of Outside Lands.
