Imagine being able to win a race from the comfort of your bed. A dream come true, don't you think?
With teams of five (one lucky mattress rider and four strong teammates to push them), participants turn Forsyth Park into one of Savannah's greatest racing venues. These speeding beds must measure at least 3 feet wide by 6 feet long, but no more than 6 feet by 8 feet, and riders must sit or lay flat. The beds must have four functional wheels that are in contact with the road at all times - no motorised or mechanical assistance is allowed. Yes, the organisers take the race very seriously. Although we did question how serious when we read that 'alcohol-fuelled' pushers are acceptable (and probably a little encouraged). You do have to sign a waiver of liability if you're taking part so try not to drink too many beers before pushing. If you're the one lying on the bed, well we'd hate for you to get travel sickness when you're flying down the street at the speed of light so go steady on the vino.
Most teams dress up in themed costume and there are prizes not only awarded to the fastest team, but also to the team with the greenest racing frame, as well as both judge's and people's choice awards. There's food and drink and a bit of an after party but frankly that's not why people come to this wacky event; they're here for the high speed beds.
The money raised by the speeding beds goes towards sustainable and eco-friendly projects in Savannah.
This is a bed time we can all really look forward to.
- Get there: Savannah is well-connected with local buses, many of which bypass Forsyth Park.
