If you're partial to a pint of Gat (that's Irish slang for Guinness in case you didn't know) then you need to visit Savannah, Georgia next March. The city is mightily proud of its Irish roots and invites people from all over the US East Coast and beyond to its parade and merry-making. Lenient drinking laws have encouraged a very brazen St. Patrick's Day in Savannah.
The parade, which will soon have reached its bicentennial year, begins at 10.15 a.m. on Gwinnett and Abercorn streets just east of Forsyth Park. Tap your feet to Irish dancing, try to resist the urge to jig to Celtic fiddling and stop and listen to the sweet lament of the Irish pipe.
After privately observing St. Patrick's Day in 1813, The Hibernian Society held the first St. Patrick's Day Parade in 1824. They could scarcely have imagined that it would grow to attract 400,000 people annually. Savannah's St. Patrick's Day Parade is the second largest in the United States and third largest in the world, so it's certainly made a name for itself. The parade features pipe bands and Irish dancers from all over the East Coast, and makes for quite the celebration.
If parades aren't your thing, then take note of other celebrations occurring throughout the day, like the greening of the fountain in Forsyth Park which signifies that the party has kicked off in earnest. If you are unable to make it to Savannah on St. Patrick's Day, don't sweat it, there are toned down events throughout March, like Tara Feis in Emmet Park overlooking the Savannah river.
Oh, there's also plenty of whiskey if you're not a fan of Guinness. Drinking 'til you're merry is practically a law on St Patrick's Day.
- Get here: Forsyth Park is bang in the middle of the city centre, so head there for St. Paddy's day merriment.
- Stay: Stay near the city centre in Midtown.
