Surf's Up! Get ready to ride the waves, make a splash or simply spectate with a cold beer at Virginia City's annual East Coast Surfing Competition.
- When? 1 August 2017
- Where? Virginia Beach
- Price: Free
When the Beach Boys sang 'Everybody go surfin,' surfin' USA' they may well have been picturing Virginia Beach, where one of the country's biggest surf fests is held every August. Attracting big name surf stars as well as keen amateurs, the event is a firm fixture on the city's sporting calendar.
Hundreds of surfers journey to the event from across the US and beyond to compete for prizes and prestigious surfing titles. The fun doesn't stop in the waves either, back on shore there are volleyball tournaments, a 5k boardwalk run, skating competitions, swimsuit contests, live music plus food and drinks stands. Hectic.
The event is free to attend although organisers are always on the look out for volunteers. There's a great party atmosphere and celebrations go on well into the early hours (if you're looking to carry on riding the festival wave). So if you're a real-life Beach Boy (or Girl) the East Coast Surfing Competition is well-worth a visit. Surf chic optional.
- Get there: Fly to Virginia Beach Airport and then take a taxi to the beach.
- Stay: Find a beach-side hotel for the weekend - you'll need it if you want a short stumble home after all that partying.
