Spend the fourth of July in the U.S. capital, Washington D.C. for the ultimate Independence Day celebrations at the annual parade.
The Land of the Free and Home of the Brave sure know how to party. They always set the bar high for Halloween and us Brits up our game every October in an attempt to match their efforts (we're getting there). However, the real party happens mid-way through the year, on the fourth of July. American Independence Day is the United States' most important event and where better to celebrate than the capital itself? Cue the 'Star Spangled Banner'.
The National Independence Day Parade is at the centre of the festivities. Commencing on Constitution Avenue at 7th Street and stretching for a mile to 17th Street, the parade is a favourite among locals and draws thousands of tourists to the area to experience an authentic fourth of July celebration. Military servicemen, equestrian, fife and drum corps, drill teams and of course elaborate floats take to the streets to show off their patriotism. You’ll need to get there early if you want a good spot as it gets very busy. Head towards 17th street to catch the parade as it finishes if you want to avoid the worst of the crowds.
Alternatively, go to Barracks Row on Capitol Hill for a mini Independence Day parade with the locals where you can see the Marine Commandant’s band perform. Or try the Palisades area near Georgetown, where residents host a parade and a free picnic afterwards, bringing the entire neighbourhood together.
And before you know it, you'll be dancing along the streets of D.C. singing ' Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light' at the top of your lungs. Just make sure you stay nearby, so you don't have far to stumble home.
